The Murwillumbah Community Improvement District (CID) Pilot Project has transformed Proudfoots Lane into a vibrant, welcoming space that celebrates the town’s creative identity and local stories. This NSW Government-funded initiative aimed to reimagine regional town centres through public art, design, and community-led activation.
Art-Public was engaged to lead the curatorial vision for the public art program along Proudfoots Lane. Beginning with early site visits and ideation, Art-Public identified opportunities where artworks could amplify the site’s use as a key pedestrian, bike and business thoroughfare. From this, five key public art opportunities were developed that encouraged exploration, discovery and connection to place.
The result is a vibrant outdoor gallery experience featuring murals, asphalt artworks and custom lightboxes. Seven artists with strong ties to the region were commissioned to deliver site-responsive works that celebrate Murwillumbah’s cultural richness and contemporary identity.
This project represents a significant step in embedding creative placemaking in Murwillumbah’s public spaces—building community pride, inspiring engagement, and inviting locals and visitors alike to see the town through fresh eyes.
