Caningeraba State School’s Caningeraba Community Connects created the We Are Caningeraba project, with a collective goal of including the broader school community in activities that foster creativity and a sense of belonging for all. The Caningeraba Community Connects vision is to support and empower families to raise healthy and resilient children in the local community.

The project saw the establishment of the Community Room, a place designed to host ongoing community initiatives. Community Room participants, including parents, grandparents and carers, took part in creative activities such as painting, sewing, screen printing and smartphone photography. School holidays workshops also took place, providing a space for skills sharing across generations.

AW’s Creative Director Claudio Kirac documented the Community Room as it flourished, with the school’s community members immersed in their creative activities. He created a series of photographs that were used to create a limited edition zine, designed by Emma van Zaane.

Claudio was further commissioned to create a series of photographic portraits, featuring the Community Room’s participants. These photographs capture a small segment of the individuals who make valuable contributions to the school and local community, and provide a glimpse into the diverse fabric that makes up the Caningeraba State School community.

The zine and body of photographic works were exhibited in a one-night only event hosted at The Walls Art Space, Miami. The exhibition concluded with the photographic subjects removing their own portraits from the walls, allowing them to partake in the exhibition and creating an immersive event.
